have the extensive training to recognize the specific pain unique to you. Their training
allows them to offer you an extensive selection of treatment options. This can save you
time and money.

Where do Drs. Duc, Folk, and Joye see patients?
Drs. Duc, Folk, and Joye see patients in two locations, their Mount Pleasant
office and in West Ashley at our Physical Medicine Pain Management Center at
8 Farmfield Avenue, Suite B. Approximately 95% of procedures can be safely
performed in our Mount Pleasant or West Ashley offices.

Is it more expensive to be seen in the Mount Pleasant office?
No. In fact, in most cases, it is approximately $300-500 less expensive to have your
procedure in our Mount Pleasant office, when compared to having it at Roper, St. Francis
or West Ashley Surgery Center. If your procedure is done at a hospital facility, you will
receive two bills. One will be a physician bill from Anesthesia Associates and the other
will be from the hospital for a "facility fee". By having your procedure in our
Mount Pleasant office, you can save $300-500 on the facility fee, due to the increased
overhead expense of the hospital.

My surgeon or primary physician has advised me to have a
nerve block. What should I do now?
The first thing to decide is whether it is important to you that you be seen by a
fellowship trained, board certified pain specialist. If you do, when your appointment is
made, simply request to be seen by Dr. Duc, Dr. Folk, or Dr. Joye.

Are epidurals the only option I have for pain management?
No. Epidural injections are the most common nerve block performed for pain management,
but there are many more options available. Through your history and examinations, your
physicians at Pain Associates of Charleston are able to guide you toward the most appropriate
treatment for your condition. Their extensive fellowship training provides them knowledge of
many different options. In addition to treating your pain more effectively, they can also help
your surgeon determine if surgery is needed.

Who is treating my pain?
Pain is a complex process, and we feel it is in your best interest to see a physician who
can not only perform the injection or nerve block, but who can also treat your pain with many
additional options - ranging from A to Z. Your pain physician should have knowledge of all of
them. To get the most effective treatment available for your pain, we strongly suggest you
seek your injection and/or treatment from a fellowship trained pain management specialist
who is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Drs. Duc, Folk, and Joye
have these qualifications, and only physicians with these qualifications will practice
within Pain Associates of Charleston.
Drs. Duc, Folk, and Joye are all anesthesiologists, certified by the American Board of
Anesthesiology. All have completed an additional one-year fellowship in pain management,
accredited by both the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American College of Graduate
Medical Education (ACGME). (The ACGME is the governing body for all medical residencies.)
Following the one-year fellowship, a written examination is offered for the candidate. Drs.
Duc, Folk, and Joye have all completed and passed the written pain management examination,
achieving full board certification.
